After School Care/Activity

The Riverside Educational Center provides structured tutoring and diverse extracurricular activities in the after-school hours for students in grades K-12 in order to improve academic achievement and foster positive social and emotional development in a safe and supportive environment.

The Riverside Educational Center (REC) offers after-school tutoring five days per week in 14-week blocks in the fall and spring semesters. Tutoring focuses on assistance with homework assignments followed by activities to develop reading, writing, and math skills.

REC strives to create a safe and supportive community for students.

Family events and parent trainings encourage parents and siblings to participate in our students’ growth.

Service-learning opportunities give our students a chance to learn about themselves while connecting with the broader Grand Valley community.

REC offers high quality and engaging STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics)-based enrichment activities both on- and off-site. Activities are designed to expose REC students to new experiences and develop new skills.

EXTENDED HOURS:
The purpose of the Extended Hours Program is to provide a comfortable, safe, and interesting environment for children. The program is designed to meet the needs of children who will be or have already spent a challenging day in school. The program offers children an opportunity to be with their friends, enrich their day through special activities and classes, work on homework assignments, and to relax. The staff makes every effort to meet individual needs while building a happy, cohesive group.

The design of the program recognizes educational enrichment as a primary means by which children pursue their own social, emotional, intellectual, and physical growth. The program includes activities from many areas including art, math, science, athletics, drama, and literature. The staff plans open-ended activities that allow children to explore ideas and solve problems independently. Center based programming allows the children freedom of choice in before and after school care.

Before School Program:
Hours: 6:30 am until release for school
Our Before School Program is open for students enrolled in Kindergarten through 5th grade. This program begins at 6:30 AM and runs until the beginning of the school day. Our before school program is a great place for children to spend their early mornings! We work on any homework that needs completed, play quiet board games and work on simple projects. If children need breakfast, families can sign up thru the District 51 Lunch Program. At the time of release (approx. 8:20 AM but varies at each school) children are sent to either breakfast or morning recess, whichever the family chooses.

After School Program & Early Release:
Hours: end of school - 6:00pm
Our After School Program is open for students enrolled in Kindergarten through 5th grade. This program begins at the end of the school day and runs until 6 PM. Our after school program is a safe, enriching environment for children! We work on homework, arts & crafts, simple science experiments, and free choice centers. Our program allows the children more time with their friends and support from staff in completing homework. After check in, the children are offered recess time, snack time, and then onto centers and homework.
